Screening for dyslexia

A screening test is a set of tasks which are designed to give an indication of
possible dyslexic difficulties for young people aged 5-14 years old.  Screening tasks are not able to diagnose dyslexia but they can identify areas of strength and challenge.  Information from a screening test can help to identify effective learning strategies and teaching
methods to empower a young person.

If a screening test suggests a moderate to high probability of dyslexic characteristics, the next step might be to consider a full diagnostic assessment.

Cost:
£150 if the young person is assessed at the assessor’s home
£150 +45p per mile if the young person is assessed at their own home or school.

Full Diagnostic Assessment

A full diagnostic assessment is suitable for young people aged 8-18 years old.  This report is a
comprehensive examination of all aspects of a young person’s experiences, strengths and challenges.
It will help you and their school to plan their tailored and effective support.

The assessment process starts with the completion of parent and young person questionnaires, followed by
an initial 30-minute conversation online or on the phone.  Schools will be asked to complete a questionnaire
and offered an opportunity to meet online or talk on the phone.  The young person and I will then work
together face-to-face for about 3 hours to complete a range of tasks.  The tasks are designed to
enable the young person to demonstrate their underlying ability, working memory, speed of
processing, phonological awareness, concentration and literacy skills.

Within three days following the assessment tasks, I will briefly
discuss my findings with you, either online or on the phone.

A full diagnostic assessment report will be completed and emailed within 3-4 weeks of the
assessment tasks. Following receipt of the report I will share
comprehensive feedback
and explanation of the assessment
findings either online or on the phone.

Cost:
£500 if the young person is assessed at the assessor's home
£500 +45p per mile if the young person is assessed at their own home or school

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it worth getting a full Diagnostic Assessment?

This question is perhaps best answered by Reid and Guise (2019)
“ the importance of an assessment. It can be a trigger for a smoother and more appropriate path for the individual and can help to relieve some of the stressors that can accompany dyslexia. We find that parents in particular are usually relieved and can be quite emotional during the feedback when a diagnosis is presented.   Assessment therefore can be the key ingredient for eventual success. The assessment also promotes self-advocacy, and this is crucial for the young person with dyslexia, particularly as he or she advances further up the school, in further and higher education and the workplace! Self-advocacy can stem from self-knowledge, and the assessment can provide the individual with this self-knowledge.”
When can my child be assessed for Dyslexia?

Current guidelines from SASC recommend that young people should be 7 years or older to take part in a full Diagnostic Assessment.  Before this Dyslexic Screeners can be used to give an indication of a young person’s strengths and weaknesses from 5 years of age.
What if my child cannot concentrate long enough to complete the assessment?

The assessment comprises of various tasks, some involve listening and speaking, some are practical and some are written.

Following each task, there will be a short break to rest and take a drink. At various points during the assessment, there will be several opportunities to have longer breaks to enjoy an appropriate snack or have a short play or rest, depending on the needs of the young person.

If you suspect the young person will struggle to finish all the tasks in one session, then the assessment can take place over two consecutive days.
